The Yellow Creek Mitigation Bank is located in Cherokee
and Forsyth Counties, Georgia within the Etowah River drainage
basin. The bank is a commercial mitigation bank owned and
operated by Yellow Creek, LLC and is comprised of over 2
miles of stream and riparian buffer restoration along the
Etowah River. The Yellow Creek Mitigation Bank was approved
in August of 2003 and is currently in its second year of
operation.
Construction and riparian buffer
restoration planting at the bank has been completed and
has just recently been awarded its second credit release
by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Acer designed the stream
and riparian buffer restoration plan that stabilized stream
banks along the Etowah River and restored a 150 foot wide
riparian corridor with native vegetation species. The bank
is valuable in that it is protecting viable populations
of Cherokee and Etowah darters and spawning habitat along
this reach of the Etowah River. The bank is also unique
in that it has been designed and constructed in association
with a large 300-acre estate lot residential sub-division
that will utilize passive recreational amenities that were
incorporated into the bank. These amenities include a walking
trail along the Etowah River complete with swings and picnic
benches, canoe/kayak take-outs and docks, and picnic shelters.
